Hi to all Olevel graduates!

The details on appeal auditions for 2012 intake are as follows.

Date: 17 Jan (Tuesday) and 19 Jan (Thursday) 2012
Time: 430-630 PM
Venue: TJC Band room

Please prepare a short excerpt (1-2 minutes) from either a piece you have played with the band before, or a solo piece. You will also be tested on sight-reading and be asked to play some scales.

Please also bring along:
1. You O Level Results slip
2. Your Report Book (with Sec 1-4 results)

dsa auditions for 2011 intake

Hello all you sec 4-ers!

A note for you peeps in case you're wondering.

The deadline for the DSA Application is the 12th of July 2010, i.e. filled in and submitted to the school by that date. You can obtain the application form from the school website at www.tjc.edu.sg and look under Temasek News right in the middle of the page for the DSA link.

Also, you can come down on any 1 of the 3 dates stated in the past few entries for the DSA auditions. Again, our audition dates are 2nd June, 6th July and 8th July. If you happen to be unavailable on all 3 days but would still wish to audition for TJBand, don't fret. We would appreciate it if you would send us an email stating that you're unable to make it and we would gladly try our best to audition you on another day. Other than that, please try to make it and adhere to the time period stated.

Do not worry if you have not completed the DSA Application form by the day of the audition. It is not necessary that you submit your DSA Application form on the day itself when you come down for audition. But if you have everything that is required in your application and wish to submit early, you can pass it to us on the audition day and we would gladly submit it to the school on your behalf. :)

PSSST!!! Updates everybody!

Please take note that there are changes made with regards to the DSA audition dates!

The auditions on the 4th of June has been cancelled, thus there will ONLY be ONE DAY in the month of June for the auditions and that is the 2nd June! Please do not come down on the 4th of June and try your best to make it on the 2nd.

With that said, if you're unable to make yourselves free on the 2nd, not to worry. There will be 2 additional days scheduled in July for the auditions to make up for the 4th of June.

For July
Dates: 6th (tues) and 8th (thurs) July 2010.
Venue: TJ Band Room
Time: 5pm - 7pm

O'lah wonderful seniors of the Alumni Band!

So sorry this is so terribly late! Well, we just want to give you guys a BIG THANK YOU for showing us a great deal of support with the instruments, cheering etc. We want you to know that had it not been for you guys, Fiesta Voyage would not be as successful as it had been and would not have such a beautiful finish! The Alumni Band had indeed made the night all the more special! We really appreciate your music and your moral support for the Band, especially to Miss Chew, Miss Kwong and Mr Lim and we will forever remember all your wise words!

Fiesta 2009 will take place on 11 December.
Let our music take you on journeys: through the jungle, the sea, and of course, the journey of life.
The name has yet to be confirmed, but the tentative name is: fiesta des voyages.
In french, well, simply because the others make you go like.... HUHHHH??!?! What does that mean?? Hahahaha

Oh yes, and the DSA letters have been sent out.

The colours are: a dark grey base with lime green printing.
The Arts@TJC logo will be printed on the back,

Note: It is not compulsory for everyone to buy the shirt, and if you want the shirt, you have to pay for it.

TJ Alumni Band Practice....

Dear all,

TJ alumni band practices will commence on next saturday.We will be preparing for our annual Fiesta concert project. Here are the details for our first band practice:

Date: 22 Nov 2008 (Saturday)
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: TJ Band Room

Concert date: 14 Dec 08 (Sun), 5pm @ TJ Audi

For those who have not touched their instruments for a long long time, you might want to come down slightly earlier to do your own warm ups. We’ll be sight reading several new band works (including pop ones) and we should confirm the repertoire by the end of the first practice.
There are be only a total of about 4 full band practices for this project(TBC). I understand that some of the university & 08 A level MEP students have not finished their exams, but do try your best to attend the practices right after your exams.

Hope you guys enjoyed our very first performance as a batch this year during National Day Celebration even though we lacked our Double Bassists and our Bassoon and didn't get to play the National Anthem due to a recording. I had fun! Hope you guys did too!

Haaaaaaaaaaaay guyz and gurlz!

Band practice will resume this Wednesday and the schedule is now Wednesday from 3.30pm to 6.30pm and Fridays from 4pm to 7pm so thats Wednesday from 3.30pm to 6.30pm and Fridays from 4pm to 7pm for you all. Please give Linsheng and the SCs your fullest attention and make the band practices as fulfilling as possible for we will definitely need everyone one of us to work together to achieve whatever we want to achieve as a band!

The tentative date for Fiesta 08 (no thats not the current title, we are cooler then that!)would be December 13th so please try and keep that day free! Band Camp would probably be a week or two before that too so keep your December free!

Last but not least, there will be a new set of revised band rules to facilitate us and ensure that we behave like the saints that we really are.

Find out more on Wednesday itself as we return to the band room once again, all 43 of us for Band Practice under the baton of the amazing Linsheng!

Here is a huge bold and capitalized "THANK YOU!" to each and everyone of you for your patience and guidance and bringing us to the light. Now with your trainings wheels removed, we are ready to soar across the azure skies and make all of you proud! Have faith in us, we will be amazing and carry on the band's flame. We love you loads and we will miss you all!

To the J1s:
Now that our pillar of support (the seniors) have left us to face their war with the As, it's time we take things into our own hands as one band! Let's all be responsible and make band and the band room an incredible experience and place for everyone of us! Remember to practice hard, cause we will have many events coming our way, and keep the band room clean! Listen to Linsheng's words of advice and have faith in him for a conductor like him is a rare gem. With him at the helm and with our willingness to work, I am confident we will be able to bring about the time-honored TJCSB magic that has been our hallmark for years and years. Sup band friends. As you might have received a message/messages from your SLs, there's going to be a gathering tomorrow, Monday evening at 6pm. You can join us earlier if you want, and you can meet us at 2pm at Pasir Ris MRT station/whitesands to buy the food stuff. If you don't want, it's A OK. Anyway, just for your information, THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL BAND CHALET THING. My parents got a chalet, so my family used it over the weekend, and Monday was free, so I was thinking, why not I invite the band over like a post-Prelude/MardiGras gathering/celebration (out of goodwill). I'm awfully sorry about the lack of planning and bad arrangement. My bad. Not the comm's ok. So, all are invited! And, stayover if you want! Direct School Admission Exercise 2008

Our first audition will be held on the 6th of June 2008, Friday (Week 2 of the school holidays) from 9.30am to 4.00pm.

All interested students are welcome. You may prepare a short piece of music (less than 2mins) that best brings out your instrumental aptitude.

Some FAQs:

How many students get into the school via DSA each year through the band?
The number varies from year to year, but as a guide, we usually get between 4-6 students each year via DSA. There will be some more students who can enter the College at the ‘Appeals’ exercise later on in the year.

Are there any academic expectations of potential DSA candidates?
Yes. As a guide, your L1R5 results for the Mid-Year Examinations should be below 30 points.

What is the audition like for DSA?
Please come prepared with a short musical extract (of not more than 2 minutes) of your choice. This should demonstrate your strengths on your chosen instrument.

During the audition itself, you will be asked to play some scales.

You will also be tested on your sight-reading.

In addition to the audition, you will also have to go through an interview with an interview panel.

What would put me at an advantage over other candidates applying for DSA?
Your level of competency of your chosen instrument would be the band’s first priority. Your academic results would be the interview panel’s next consideration. In addition, leadership positions held at your Secondary School would definitely give you an edge over the other candidates.

What are some of the College’s expectations of the DSA candidates?
Students who enter TJC via DSA [Band] will be expected to serve and play with the band for the full 2 years that they are with the College.

Hey everyboday.. I actually realised that the countdown started on the 12th day before the concert. haha! But well, 10th of May came anyhow. & well is now gone as well :) Note the rhyme!

Befor i get carried away, let me say what i have/want to say:

If everyone still remember. 3days before the concert, people were actually sceptical about Prelude28. Who knew what might happen. Well, who would have thought we would kinda like 'wake up' in time, to realise that concert is in 2 days on thursday night. And come friday, share each others thoughts and start looking forward to the concert as one band; as tjcsb.

10th May reported to school early in the morning; worried?
10th May left school late in the night; over-the-moon!

If only time were a person and stood still at that point of time. I must say, i was impressed and happy that we pulled it off. Impressed not by the apparent skills, but impressed cos' i felt passion, and the focus, and the want to make Prelude 28 a success. I'm proud of tjcsb. Really. We have come a long way. Ups and Downs (more downs i must say). Rough days. Dry patches. Everything. Thanks band for making Prelude 28 a success. :)

Time flies and as how band camp went past like zooooooooooooooooooooooooom. This 2weeks will be similar in that sense. It will be the 10th of May before you know it.

Listen to this interpretation of Die Fledermaus by Seiji Ozawa and the Wiener Philharmoniker. [Orchestral Version] Watch how the musicians respond to the conductor and 'feel' the music [Do they just look at their scores?]

Although the interpretation may seem a little weird, I wish to put across the fact that musicianship is extremely important! You can see that in comparison to most orchestral versions, our style of playing is extremely "rigid and straight"! Let's change that, shall we. Similarly, we have to imitate the sensitivity of expression and articulation. Listen out for the string parts. We have to imitate the 'touch' of the strings on our wind instruments to make this piece presentable.

Well, before we even talk about style, please polish up all notes first :D

Hey tjcsbandpeepz.

Kinda decided to drop a post to not keep the blog dead. Oh well. Time flies eh? Just 8 days ago we were boarding our boeing airplane to the Land of the Rising Sun. Still remember that i had the song "leaving on a jet plane" playing in my head. Although i knew "when i'll be back again".
Just one word to describe the trip and the whole experience....

"surreal"

Looking at the Japanese girls play their songs with so much passion, really want to make me not regret spending time in and on band. :)

Well, so to all year1s, i do hope that this trip has once again ignited a passion for music in you guys. & even more, created a bond so tightly knitted between all of you. Remember that you guys make the band alright? You guys make tjband. :)

To year2s, well, this trip kinda marks the penulitmate huge event in the year of 2008 for us before we step down. All the way from SYF. We've come a long way. And i must say, it's one hel* of an experience. Haha! These are memories worth keeping. Just to let you guys know, I still believe in TJband. I really do. ;) I'm really proud to be part of this thing with you guys.

To all, treasure your time here in the band. Don't ever give up for there will always be a way. So Prelude 28 is coming right up. We have about 2 more months. Let's do this together alright okay.

Concert is finally over. Don't really know how you guys are feeling. Relieved/Disappointed/Happy/Sad. Either way, just wanna wrap the year's events up by saying a big THANK YOU to all you band people for putting in time and effort for the concert, coming back for practices even during the holidays when there's so much hmwk to be done.

To all graduating secondary 4 students who would like to get a feel on what it's like to play in a JC band or to those who are keen on coming to TJ (some important dates to take note!)

Temasek Junior College will be having an annual open house on the 5th of October. Do come down from about 2-6pm! COME COME COME!

The band will be having a tune-in session on the 17th of November. If you would like a feeeeel of how it's like to play in a JC band. DO COME AND JOIN US!

To prepare for the up-coming concert, we will be having a short 3 day camp from the 7th to the 9th of December. More details will be updated soon!

From the beginning of the year, we had practices after practices that which eventually brought us to SYF and Prelude27. What a way to start the year eh?
All the smiles and tears/the laughters and sorrows/all the ups and downs.
Life in TJ would be rather tragic and monotonous without all those stuff.(yea man)
Thanks for all the memories that we will certainly keep close to our hearts.
We certainly did enjoy our "one extraordinary journey" with you guys as TJCSB07. We hope you guys did too!

Anyway, study hard & do well! We’re tj after all.

For all students who missed the first round of auditions and are still keen on DSA-ing into TJC through band, we should be having a 2nd round of auditions during the course of the June holidays. However the exact date has not been set. Do check this blog for the latest updates.

Please refer to the previous post regarding DSA auditons for the requirements expected when coming for auditions.

In addition, it will also be preferable for you to bring your secondary school report book and related documents as stated on the TJC website.

Direct School Admission Exercise 2007

Our first audition will be held on the 4th of June 2007, Monday (Week 2 of the school holidays) from 9.00am to 3.00pm.

All interested students are welcome. You may prepare a short piece of music (less than 2mins) that best brings out your instrumental aptitude.

Some FAQs:

How many students get into the school via DSA each year through the band?
The number varies from year to year, but as a guide, we usually get between 4-6 students each year via DSA. There will be some more students who can enter the College at the ‘Appeals’ exercise later on in the year.

Are there any academic expectations of potential DSA candidates?
Yes. As a guide, your L1R5 results for the Mid-Year Examinations should be below 30 points.

What is the audition like for DSA?
Please come prepared with a short musical extract (of not more than 2 minutes) of your choice. This should demonstrate your strengths on your chosen instrument.

During the audition itself, you will be asked to play some scales. You will also be tested on your sight-reading.

In addition to the audition, you will also have to go through an interview with an interview panel.

What would put me at an advantage over other candidates applying for DSA?
Your level of competency of your chosen instrument would be the band’s first priority. Your academic results would be the interview panel’s next consideration. In addition, leadership positions held at your Secondary School would definitely give you an edge over the other candidates.

What are some of the College’s expectations of the DSA candidates?
Students who enter TJC via DSA [Band] will be expected to serve and play with the band for the full 2 years that they are with the College.

Who we are seeking in 08/09 (Instrumentalists who will be given priority):
Tuba, Euphonium, Flute, Trombone. But we will consider all band instrumentalists.

Hello all!

Prelude 27 was a success. We had a sold out concert, people were standing, it was amazing.
We had a mere one week to prepare for it, but everyone kept their spirits high and attitudes optimistic and we pulled through.

Hymn was beautiful that night, I don't know how many of you felt It, but I'm sure I wasn't the only one. (:

Year ones, I applaud your stage band. You guys didnt have much time either and you definitely did it justice.

Year twos, I don't know why but Prelude 27 feels so much more different and special than Prelude 26. Lol.

In other news, would the year ones kindly start blogging here? XP

It must be exceedingly unexciting to keep seeing entries from Yours Truly.

Dear TJCSB,

Well, this has been a long journey for all of us.
We started out not knowing if we would even make it to SYF. We made our teachers, alumni, and Lin Sheng wonder if we would be the 2nd batch to put anything less than a Gold on that roll of honour. We came this far.

If you dare to admit it, we do not possess many spectacular players. While other bands may be blessed with their star players, good balance, or both, our batch has not the strength that many of our seniors possess.

As I sat in alumni practice, I mused to myself that what comes so easily to many of them, takes much more effort for us to achieve. We've sacrificed many nights, we've worked as hard as the rest of the bands, and sure - maybe we don't have the 'shiok' high-ness of languishing in that Gold with Honours, but as a batch, we have come so far together. And I'm proud of what we've done, proud that we have upheld the TJ Band sound. Proud that we didn't abandon the special TJ touch just for another award.

We may not have as much technical prowess or skill that many of our senior possess, but I believe we share the same TJ spirit.

When the alumni led us in the TJ cheer immediately after the results were released, even though they saw the looks on our faces, maybe then you might have thought it silly. But this is TJ Band. We're here for the music, we're here for the sound. At the end of the day, what we want to bring out, is Lin Sheng's passion. We're not here to chase after the awards.

Remember the long nights we spent despairing over how badly we were playing - one month, even two weeks before SYF. The number of times Adillia stood in front of you, Nigel, Yao Zong, Hanafi, Ms Chew... The number of tears we cried thinking we would never make it.

This is not a failure. We had years of reputation to uphold. It was a burden, but it wasn't our fault that the batches before left that wall of Gold for us to maintain. It wasn't their fault for doing well. It isn't our fault for not being a strong batch. And I think we've done a mighty good job of putting another Gold on that wall.

I know some of you might still be reeling right now, but I know we did well.

And we have 5 days left to concert, lets just put the same passion and discipline that we've cultured for SYF into making it beautiful - into bringing out Lin Sheng in our playing, into giving our audience the magic that is our trademark sound. Because the road doesn't end at SYF.

You can never lose unless you choose to admit defeat.

Lets choose to move on and stay true to all we are as TJBand.

i'm gonna post long so please have patience...

this thing suddenly came to me when the

ww's were playing D of "hymm..."

ms chew kept saying that if we thought of like

common scenes or what for each section of the piece,

then we might sound more "magical"

=got the X factor=

which is rather true... this is the easiest way to be more musical..

i guess

My friend's aunt help to translate the jap words

of this piece,

and it's written for a band's 40th anniversary

it's about the setting up of the band,

its "turbulences"

and kinda finally its success

~~~

so this idea thingy suddenly came to me during prac today

and the idea just flowed on

wanna share it.

hope when you're reading it,

you're imagining the piece as you go along

~~~

the starting is like a new innocent idea suddenly springs out,

and many thoughts suddenly come into someone's mind

like somebody's daydream to set up a band

that's why the dissonances, tension, lines weaving in and out

so when A starts (the flute part)

it's just like very dreamy mood, light

day dreaming bout the whole process to set up a band -- happy

so B might be the person finally tried to start a band

and the horns, saxes, eupho, etc come in with all the

disgusting dissonances at 3rd bar of B

may be the small turbulences

and finally at C!

this small group of pple come tog.

and they started playing pieces tog...

which is something very joyous and to be extremely proud of

hence the fanfare-like lines the brasses play?

if you listen carefully at D

and compare to some drama shows or what

it is like so heartbreaking and like

something bad suddenly befall the band or what

(my english not very good, sorry)

then 9 bars after D, when the saxes come in with melody

it's like this person optimism and self-motivation

telling himself and the band to MUST PERSEVERE

(in a subtle way)

So now E comes in,

which is when the whole band is motivated

and works DAMN hard or what

cos it sounds like exciting,

agitated,

and whatever lah... limited vocab.

at L, it's like the last lap

before a comp. or perf or what

so everybody works extra hard

and now,

M is like their first ever perf or whatever

and they're so proud of it and everything!

so it sound rather majestic and yadada

after this experience, the work gets harder

and then this new theme is introduced in N by bass cl, flutes, etc

and then in O, there're many scalic passages

ascending and descending

like turbulences or what

then P and Q is just more turbulences?

esp in Q, where this line keeps weaving in and out

by diff. instrus,

and the triplets are like agitated kind of feeling?

and 8 bars before R,

is like the band suddenly kinda fall apart again

or like sth befall them again

here comes R, the supposedly "most magical part"?

so this new guy tried to bring all the band members back tog

and talked to them

gave them hope or what lah

(sounds so cheesy)

so this is like the turning point for the band

then in S and T,

the band feels so much more motivated to go on

to persevere against all odds...

at U, when everybody lands on the E-flat chord

it's like

"woah! we're finally here!" that kind of feeling

it's the ultimate success kind of feeling

and this goes on all the way till the end of the piece...

ya, so that's what came to me during prac

i thought it was interesting

and i felt it was rather important to think as one

while we're playing...

i mean,

we're not playing just notes and dynamics right

there is this "umph" factor that we have not gotten yet

anyway, it just a suggestion and free for contradictions and criticisms

~~~

hehex and there are some stuff that im rather frustrated bout

in our band's playing

not sure whether can discuss here but im gonna say it

very vaguely bah

i hope that EVERYBODY counts the rests

as in like quaver, crotchet rests

esp. from F till K...

we have like * _ _ * _ _ * _

* meaning note

_ meaning rest

and it IS EXTREMELY frustrating

when the whole band doesnt count

and COMES IN EARLIER THAN WE'RE SUPPOSED TO!

to us, it's natural cos we're excited

but to the audience,

it's damn frustrating lah

cos the band is anticipating the beat

and it feels uncomfortable

so i really do hope

when you find yourself rushing

or your friend's rushing

nudge yourself or your friend to BE CALM!

listen to the whole band

count the rests and subdivide each note in your head

and most importantly,

LOOK AT THE CONDUCTOR!

and i do hope that everyone,

including me of course,

im not shooting anyone... just suggesting

will take note of end of notes -- tapering down nicely then breathe

and the dynamic markings

i hope that we will not overblow,

of course i must control myself too

hope everyone will work hard towards this

opportunity to perform in front of so many pple

from diff. JC's, and the judges

and put up a great performance

hope that everyone will not take Lin Sheng for granted

thinking of ways to improve the band's everything

don't blame them for whatever...

please understand their intentions

cos they just want the best for ALL of us...

and try our best...

This is just a quick update for everyone on our band schedule for the remaining twenty six days to SYF.

Anyone who is also involved in the Jap student thing in College thats also on 11 May, please, use your blain.

Not a lot of practices to SYF, as you can see. I don't see why anyone has to ask the members of the band to try and make it for the entire duration of a practice. You should know it yourself. No one is responsible for you. But whatever you do, the level of awareness of your own sound, your attendance rate for practices, you are responsible for the rest of the band. It takes all of us to make the band, but it only takes one to break it.

I'm not trying to be dramatic here, but I'm just trying to drive home the point of how important self-discipline and awareness is. Be aware of the person next to you. Be aware of the melody, be aware of how important your own part is, or isn't. Adjust for intonation. Shape your lines. Hold full value. Listen. LISTEN.

Make what we get for SYF what we deserve. Lets not walk off that stage knowing we could have done better.

This is the last stretch, whatever we achieve in the next 26 days is all we will have to show on 11 May. The goal isn't Honours. We call ourselves musicians. What is the point in that if we do not make music? Hymn was not written to be played for SYF. (So the set pieces are, but whatever, yo) It was written, it was inspired, and it was crafted by the composer to create that very atmosphere and setting he saw in his mind.

So lets play it because it was made to be music. Lets play it because we want to enjoy it. I know we've played it a trillion times again and again and again and we're probably starting to turn green in the face at the prospects of having to play it, well.. again.

But lets play the piece as best as we can. Because as a musician, thats all the credit and honour we can give to the composer, and our conductor.

TJCSB'07. Lets make 11 May the best performance of Hymn we will ever play. (Of course no harm repeating it on 19 May for our concert. Lol.)

In other news, tickets for our concert on May 19 have been given to you guys on Saturday.

Hello hello. I know I've taken ages to update this blog and I sincerely apologize. *bows*

So yes, it's a new year for all of us and not many days to SYF.

Let's not do this just because our seniors have all returned with Golds, Gold with Honours, and Top Band positions (although yes, this is undeniably important), but also because we want to be good musicians and play music as music was written for.

Out of respect for our brilliant conductor Lin Sheng, and for Satoshi Yagisawa, lets play the piece and play it well, okay? (:

The road isn't going to be all fun and games but if we're gonna dare to call ourselves musicians, let's make music.

This isn't easy, especially for us woodwinds (lol), but with the right attitude and determination we'll get there. Don't feel demoralized now, because you know you can be better. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, because that's the first step to getting it right.

WE CAN DO IT. Don't give up now, it's not the time. Just keep at it and come out of SYF knowing that you've tried your best. Don't regret not having given your all. (:
